Even though Fountain Hills is considered a suburb of Mesa, it also is only 30 miles away from Phoenix via Arizona Routes 87 and 202. This commute is a little long but certainly doable; some residents drive to Phoenix every day for work. This might explain why the average commute time for people who live here is 31 minutes, which is five minutes longer than both national and state averages. Mesa is nearly half the distance -- it’s only 17 miles away via Arizona Route 87, also known as the Beeline Highway. The fountain that the town is named after is located in the middle of a lake, and shoots out 7,000 gallons a minute, for 15 minutes, every hour. It was built in 1970, and was the largest fountain in the world for more than ten years after its creation. The fountain is part of a 64-acre park, which is definitely the most popular in town. The other part of the town’s name references the hills that surround the area. These are great recreational opportunities, as they are perfect for hiking, walking, or jogging.
